Green Collar Economy

Representative Sue Wallis, from the great little corner of Wyoming known as Recluse, introduced several ’sustainable agriculture’ bills into this winter’s legislative session, and we’re still waiting to hear their fate. You can be sure all the representatives from both Teton and Lincoln counties heard from us regarding the potential of the new green economy, especially as it applies with agriculture.

The next book for the Free Range Brave Chickens will be Van Jones’ Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems. He refers to (1) the failed economy and (2) the spiraling environmental destruction that has derived from that economy.

What sense can a political activist from Los Angeles make in our rural communities? LOTS. His analysis of how the last economy failed both inner city–largely minority–communities and rural areas at the same time points directly to the way green solutions can engage people in these ‘left-behind’ places to bring the necessary vitality to the concept of an eco-economy. If necessity is the Mother of invention, the dire news coming in from both economic and environmental fronts should be enough to tell us our Mother Is Here–and Jones’ book encourages us to act on the possibilities inherent in today’s chaos.
